Rules & Expectations
The guidelines noted below have been established to ensure the safety and well-being of each individual boarder, and the smooth day to day running of the residence. They are intended to be fair and to help foster a healthy, safe and comfortable environment for all boarders.
All members of the QMS school community are expected to:
- be courteous, respectful, and considerate to others
- use appropriate language and behaviour
- care for their personal belongings
- show respect for other people's belongings
- demonstrate care for the environment by keeping the school facilities neat and tidy
- acknowledge and assist visitors at all times
- recognize the impact of positive role modeling on other students, especially the younger students at the school
All of these expectations apply both in and out of the residence, without exception.
At Queen Margaret's School, we expect students to behave at all times with good sense, courtesy and a due regard for safety. This is consistent with our goal of encouraging students to be responsible and self-reliant and is part of our school's behavioral expectations.
While under School Supervision, students are subject to the same expectations of behaviour as apply during the school day. "Under School Supervision" includes all times that a student is sponsored or under the care of the School, events sanctioned by the School, and in the case of boarders, during the entire time of their residence on campus with the School acting in loco parentis. "Under School Supervision" also covers students traveling to and from the School, on and off campus, on all School run activities such as field and class trips, athletic competitions, dances, etc., whether they take place during the school day or after hours, and any time in School Uniform.
The smooth operation of our school community relies, not upon pages of rules and consequences, but rather upon the willingness of the students to act in a responsible manner, demonstrating respect for rights and property of all other members of our community. Every effort will be made to help students to learn appropriate and responsible behaviour. There are however, certain behaviours and actions that will not be tolerated.
Any student who persistently infringes upon the rights of other students to enjoy the benefits of the School may be asked to leave. This includes disruption in class, or on school grounds, physical or verbal bullying, or harassment, or any other form of anti-social behaviour. A final decision for dismissal rests with the Head of School. All students are under School rules when traveling to and from the School at the beginning and end of holidays or weekend leave, or on school sanctioned or sponsored trips or activities.
