Counseling & Advising

Promoting Your Child's Success at QMS

It is our fundamental belief that a successful education requires a three-way partnership between student, parents and the School. Parents and teachers are encouraged to develop open lines of communication in order to address any questions or areas of concern at the earliest possible state. Should parents have any questions we recommend they contact their daughter’s subject teacher or Faculty Advisor.

Academic Advising
Beginning in Grade 10 our Academic Advisor will support the academic success of your daughter by providing information needed for graduation, entrance requirements for post-secondary institutions, assisting in the application process, providing scholarship information, and discussing career choices. Our Academic Advisor will meet with each student individually many times during their Grade 11 and 12 years. Organized and planned travelling such as our Eastern University trip, visits to local universities, such as UBC, SFU, University of Victoria and Vancouver Island University and attending local career and university fairs, will take place throughout the year.

Personal Counseling

Counseling services are available to support the student’s social and emotional needs and to promote a healthy environment.

Faculty Advisors
Each Senior School member is a Faculty Advisor. As a Faculty Advisor a teacher is responsible for a small group of students and supports each student’s success by monitoring their academic progress, by facilitating communication between teachers, student, and parents, and by promoting positive and supportive relationships. You will be notified of your daughter’s Faculty Advisor in September and can expect a minimum of five contacts per year.

Learning Assistance
Our Learning Assistance program offers students support for academic success on an individual or group basis. Teachers, parents, and students work together to create an academic plan for success.

Homework
Depending upon the academic needs of each student, extracurricular circumstances, and time of the year, homework assignments can vary. Daily homework should range from a minimum of one hour for Grade 8 students up to a minimum of 2 hours for Grade 12 students.

Parents can support their daughter’s success by monitoring homework and by communicating with teachers regularly. All teachers welcome comments or questions from parents and are eager to clarify expectations and discuss ways to help reduce anxieties related to homework completion.
